2 win district titles for Wildcat Takedown Club

Program qualifies 7 wrestlers to state

The Wildcat Takedown Club youth wrestling program in Cassville had a strong showing at the district tournament, with multiple wrestlers battling their way onto the podium and several earning spots at the upcoming state championships.

Leading the way were district champions Brynn Weldy and Isaiah Horton. Weldy is a three-time state finalist and placer.

“She enters this year’s tournament highly motivated and determined as she sets her sights on capturing a state championship,” a Club press release said.

Finishing as district runners-up were Steven Hall and Justus Greek, each facing tough runs through competitive brackets and fighting hard to make major improvements within themselves this year, the release said.

The team also had a strong group of third-place finishers in Hazel Hunter, EmmeLynn Brewer, and Brantley Stubblefield each fought hard and finished the tournament on the podium.

Rounding out the placers was Jace Ross, whose bracket was a tough one, with several challenging opponents.

“Despite knowing the road wouldn’t be easy, he stepped onto the mat and wrestled some of his best matches of the year, battling hard to earn a fourth-place finish,” the release said.

Several other wrestlers competed hard but came up just short of placing.

“Jeremiah, Ulysseus, and Bowen all fought tough matches and represented the team well,” the release said. “While their district run has come to an end, they showed determination throughout the tournament and throughout the season.

“Coach Michael (Hunter) has been hard at work rebuilding and growing the program back into something great. Now in his second year of coaching, he has dedicated countless hours to developing the next generation of wrestlers and helping create future champions for years to come. He is also grateful for the support of the parents, whose commitment and encouragement keep the kids involved and engaged in the sport.”

With districts complete, the focus now shifts to the next challenge. District placers will competed at the State Tournament Friday and Saturday, and girls state was on March 15.
