Through the years

Aug. 16, 1972 A recent tour through the Holy Land was enjoyed by a group of 35 people from southwest Missouri, including eight from this area. Leading the tour was Rev. Fred Lynn, pastor of the Corinth Baptist Church. Those from this area included: Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Perkins, Mindy Lynn, Thelma Fogg, Pauline Cox, Martha Windes and Opal Lynn. The group also visited several points of interest in Europe.

Local gardener Hollis Harper brought in to the Cassville Democrat office some tomatoes he produced in his garden this year. His big beauties averaged three pounds each. His garden scarecrow was featured in the Democrat back in the spring.

The Exeter Softball Tournament concluded on Monday with second place going to the Allied Telephone squad from Purdy. Team members were: Mike Hagedorn, Jim Bower, Bill Butterworth, J.D. House, Raymond Krueger, Bob Marbut, Mike Knight, Benny Lawson and Bob Norman.

Exeter School District will open classes Aug. 25, according to Superintendent Don Parsons. Butch Henningson is the high school principal.

Aug. 11, 1982 Four students from Barry County received degrees at Southwest Missouri State University summer graduation exercises held July 30. Those receiving their degrees were: Leanne Huntress, Monett; Martha Duncan, Exeter; Verna Dalton, Washburn; and Mary Blinzler.

The Jenkins Little League squad playing in a Tri-Lakes league of Little League competition this summer included Chris Vaught, Mike Adams, Dan Bowman, Brian Atwood, Casey Crass, Mike Hull, Travis Hilburn, Ricky Berkley, Mike Sturgell, Jim Sturgell, Chris Elsworth and bat boy Jason Sturgell. The team was coached by Jim Williams and Don Bowman.

Cassville’s newest business is Everyman’s Computer Store, located on Main Street. The business will feature a Texas Instrument Company dealership. Officials are Pat Jines, president; Jim Walker, vice president and marketing; and Karen Branstetter, vice president and business administration.

Aug. 5, 1992 Jon Horner was recently named chairman of the PACE board of directors. He is replacing Steve Burch in the position, and Jack Nickols was named to the board of directors’ post created by the departure of Burch.

Robert Ward of Cassville has been named fire captain for the City of Aurora. He has been a member of the Cassville volunteer fire force.

A Cassville golfer, Shane Boyd, qualified to play in the Hogan Tour Ozark Open at Springfield’s Highland Springs on Friday and Saturday. He was accompanied to the prestigious event by his high school coach, Jack Farrow.
