May 24, 1972

Silver Leaf Benefit Club met this week to install new officers. Those installed were Wanda Peterson, president; Mary Francis Baker, vice president; Ida Blalack, secretary; and Louise Fisher, treasurer; and Sue Mitchell, corresponding secretary. The meeting was held in the Mitchell home. Also hosted by Hazel Edmondson, Frances Blankenship and Dove LeCompte.

The annual Alumni Banquet will be held this Saturday night in the school cafeteria. Co-masters of ceremonies are Max Cooper and Glen Nicoll. The class of 1922 will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Maco Farwell is in charge of making arrangements for the class activities.

Summer school opened Monday at Cassville with 110 pupils enrolled.

Bob Casteel, president of the Community Recreation Commission, reported 90 youngsters had signed up to play ball this season.

The 1970 Census of Housing counted 8,053 houses in Barry County. The county’s population totaled 19,597.

May 19 1982

The annual sale of red poppies by the veterans of foreign wars of Cassville was conducted this week. The fundraising event is held each year before Memorial Day. This year’s workers included: Jean Bozwell, Garland Gabbert, Opal Weathers and Ruby Workman. Lamoin Weathers is the Post Commander.

Marcia Henbest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henbest of Cassville, will graduate cum laude this spring from Southwest Missouri State University, with a major in special education and learning disabilities.

Cassville Middle School held graduation ceremonies Tuesday. According to Principal Charles Cudney, there were 86 students promoted to high school next year.

Cassville Board of Education extended two teaching contracts Tuesday night; one to Jeanette Cowherd as music director and one to Jane Smith as a part-time art instructor.

Southwest Future Homemakers of America chapter at Washburn named Sherry Wright president of the group for the coming year.

May 13, 1992

Top 10 students for the 1992 graduating class at Cassville High School are: valedictorian Kristin Philbrick; salutatorian Stephanie Moser; Sonya Allred; Phillip Myers; Kyle Williams; Martha Ray; Tameron Cudney; Christina Buntin; Jackie Dyer; and Sara Row Powell.

Susan Brock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Blain Brock of Cassville, recently appeared in the performance Amadeus at Southwest Baptist University. She is majoring in telecommunications and English.

Dean Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ellis of Cassville, will graduate Saturday from the University of Missouri School of Medicine with a medical doctor degree.
