Solo to state

Winchell 3rd at districts, returning to Mizzou

For the second consecutive season, only one Cassville girls wrestler will be on the mats at Mizzou.

Analeigh Winchell, at 155 pounds, went 5-1 at the Class 1, District 3 Tournament in Buffalo on Friday and Saturday, taking third place and becoming the only Lady Wildcat out of eight to qualify to the Class 1 State Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 25-26 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Winchell picked up two pins and a technical fall in her first three matches before being pinned by district runner-up Addie Davis, of Adrian, while leading in points, 7-4. Despite the loss, a bubble-match win over Marshfield’s Abygail Spencer — a pin in the third period when already up 4-0 — put Winchell through to state.

Winchell also finished the day on a win, pinning Odessa’s Wylie Smith in the second period of the third-place bout while leading 8-1. Last year as a sophomore, Winchell finished in sixth place at the state tournament.

Casey Parsons, Cassville girls wrestling coach, said even though she took third at districts, Winchell’s potential at state is great.

“Analeigh just got caught in her semifinal match, and that happens sometimes in wrestling,” Parsons said. “I know she can beat both of the girls that were in the finals. She wrestled great this weekend, and we are looking forward to state. Her goals are still the same for state and we are going to fine tune a few things this week to accomplish those goals.”

In other results, at 100 pounds, Isabella Bauman went 2-2 and was one match away from the bubble round. Allison Deaver, at 115 pounds, fell in her first match and won two consolation matches before being defeated in the consolation quarterfinals.

At 120 pounds, Gracey Farsungchin went 1-2, as did Hopelyne Thompson at 125 pounds, Myah Dunfee at 130 pounds and Alexis Lands at 170 pounds. Estrella Garcia, at 140 pounds, was the only Lady Wildcat to go 0-2 at the tournament.

“I am proud of how all the girls wrestled,” Parsons said. “We won a few we didn’t expect and then had some heartbreaking situations, too. But, these girls have grown so much this season on and off the mat, I look forward to what each of them being to the team next year.”
