Packaged matches smoke at Post Office

A suspicious package at the Cassville Post Office Tuesday morning was investigated by the Springfield Fire Department.

Dana Kammerlohr, Cassville police chief, said a call was received at about 7:30 a.m. from the Post Office regarding a package that began to smoke.

Cassville police cleared the scene and investigated the package, ultimately calling in the Springfield unit.

Between 9:30-10 a.m., the unit determined the cause of the smoke was strike-anywhere matches, and the threat was removed.

Kammerlohr said there will be no citations from police.

According to the USPS website, strike-anywhere matches are deemed nonmailable.
