Zahn siblings attain Eagle Scout status

Brother lives with Williams Syndrome; sister first female Eagle Scout in Troop
Zurich and Zella Zahn, brother and sister, were honored at a special joint Eagle Scout Court of Honor in their hometown of Monett on June 28.
Zurich and Zella are the son and daughter of Andrew and Carrie Zahn, of Monett.
Zurich Zahn, diagnosed at five years old with Williams Syndrome – a rare genetic condition which affects his development and causes distinct cognitive and physical traits – has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 38. His accomplishment demonstrates any individual with unique needs, can, with determination, perseverance and support from family and friends, achieve Scouts highest rank. His journey to Eagle Scout has inspired and encouraged others.
Through his Eagle Scout Service Project, Zurich has advocated and promoted support of his fellow students with communication needs by placing picture communication boards on every school bus in Monett R-1 Schools, as well as Oakview State School and Verona School buses.
The communication boards may be easily accessed by students and bus drivers and encourage students with low verbal skills, anxiety, or difficulty with English skills, to communicate a need or challenge.
Zella Zahn made history as the first girl to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout since Troop 38 was founded in 1948, 77 years ago. This achievement reflects not only her hard work and leadership but also the broader transformation of Scouting America (formerly, Boy Scouts of America) as more opportunities for girls are now available within the organization. Zella’s Eagle Scout Service Project not only benefited students and teachers at Monett Elementary School, but also paid homage to her Dad’s Eagle Scout Service Project back in 1989. Zella made updates to the Monett Elementary Outdoor Classroom space by adding posts to mark the trail, created a custom map, cleared pathways and cleaned graffiti from structures. Zella also created binders with 75+ nature-themed lessons for teachers to easily access, as well as backpacks with writing supplies, first aid kits, and magnifying glasses, that teachers can take as they lead their class in a lesson in nature.
The Zahn siblings have each dedicated countless hours to service projects, leadership roles, and other Scout activities. They have demonstrated Scout Spirit through their determination, tenacity, and community involvement.
The Court of Honor was held at First United Methodist Church, located at 1600 North Central Ave. in Monett on Saturday, June 28 at 3 p.m.
The event included participation from local leaders, Scoutmasters, their fellow Scouts, and family members, as well as recognition of Zurich and Zella’s accomplishments throughout their Scouting journey.
About the Eagle Scout Rank
The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement in Scouting, and only a small percentage of Scouts ever attain this rank. To earn the Eagle rank, Scouts must complete a series of merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and complete a significant service project that benefits the community. The process requires years of commitment, discipline, and perseverance, making it one of the most distinguished honors a young person can receive.
