The Cassville boys wrestling team earned its first tournament win of the season on its first attempt and for the first time at home.
The inaugural Cassville Tournament was held on three mats at the FEMA Event Center and middle school gymnasium on Saturday, with four Wildcats earning first-place medals, another four finishing in second place and one taking third.
First-place finishers included Bradley Stumpff at 120 pounds, Riley James at 150 pounds, Colton Roark at 157 pounds and Tristan Thompson at 165 pounds.
As a team, Cassville won the event with 273.5 points, ahead of second place Greenwood’s 248.5 and third place Clinton’s 210.5. Ten total teams participated in the tournament, and 20 Wildcats total competed.
Nathan Fortner, Cassville wrestling coach, said getting to experience such success in the first home tournament was amazing.
“The boys did a great job taking it one match at a time and focusing on that the team points and wins will come,” he said. “We had 10 teams in our first ever boys tournament, and I thought as a team, we wrestled well. They wrestled the full 6 minutes and didn’t let up. I’m proud of the effort.”
Three of Cassville’s four first-place finishers were state qualifiers last year, and Fortner said the fourth winner, plus a runner-up, stood out among the squad.
“All of the kids performed really well in front of our home town but there are two individuals that stick out to me,” Fortner said. “The first is Brad Stumpff, who won first place at 120 pounds. Brad is an upperclassman (junior) and one of the leaders on our team. He showed grit and determination winning his first ever wrestling tournament.
“The other is Jaret Hinson, another junior and leader of our team, who wrestled a great tournament at 138 finishing as a runner up.”
Though the Wildcats enjoy a boost in confidence with the early-season success, Fortner said the tournament showed the Wildcats some of their weaknesses, as well.
“I was very pleased with the results of our boys tournament,” he said. “We had a few tough matches that showed us where we can get better at. We also got to showcase the hard work we’ve been putting in, and in front of our home crowd. It also was good to see that the majority of the top 3 finishes were from freshman and sophomores.
“I think winning this tournament did give our kids some confidence, but we are still going to focus on the next match and let the process handle the results. We have some tough tournaments coming up in our schedule that are going to let us know where we’re at. One of them is Harrisonville, which we will be at this upcoming Friday and Saturday.”
