Celebrate Recovery where are they now: month 11, step 11

Sater: ‘You have to make that decision for yourself; no one else can make it for you’

Sharon Sater first told her story about her journey with Celebrate Recovery (CR) two years ago, on Nov. 24, 2021, as part of a 12-part series published in the Cassville Democrat, one step of the 12-step program for each month of the year.

Sater said although she didn’t struggle with drugs or alcohol, she is no different from anyone else who attends a meeting.

“I was blessed in the fact I came from a heritage of faith,” she said. “Many people don’t know what that is like. I honestly care about their journeys, and I want to help them be better. I can help direct them to a God that loves them just the way they are, and who they become as they walk the steps.”

Sater said her issues include pride, control and being a perfectionist.

“Some people come for information, some come to support a friend,” she said. “We don’t care why you are there; we don’t even ask. We aren’t there to fix you; we are there to support you.”

Sater said CR is a non-judgement zone.

“It is non-denominational, you don’t have to join anything and there is no charge to attend,” she said. “We stress confidentiality and anonymity; it is a safe place for people to share.”

Sater said there are men and women’s addiction small group, as well as, men and women’s small issues group, but a new one for CR is a small group for men who have been in the Department of Corrections.

“If you are thinking of joining, we will welcome you as soon as you are ready,” she said. “But, at the beginning of the year, we begin again with the 12 steps. This would be a great time to start because you can get in at the start when we lay out the groundwork.”

Sater said she feels like there is strength in numbers, and CR is a family of caring people.

“You might be struggling with grief or food issues,” she said. “You don’t have to pretend; as soon as you walk up those stairs you have support.”

Sater said there are five essentials they look to at CR: 1: Look to Jesus – we trust in him 2: The 12 steps – you work them 3: A sponsor – we get you one 4: The meeting – we attend them 5: Services – you do it “One is more blessed to give than to receive,” Sater said. “I am blessed to give my time to CR. We will celebrate 15 years in April 2024.” Sater said CR is always doing something to encourage or to build on the previous lesson or prepare for the next one.

“We also have childcare,” she said. “We are a resource for the community. Whatever the issue, if it is addiction, that is not who you are. The first thought is often, ‘Do I want to get clean.’ You have to make that decision for yourself; no one else can make it for you.”
