Final June jail escapee captured

U.S. Marshals apprehend Che-Tiul in Pennsylvania

The last of seven Barry County jail inmates that escaped the jail on June 1 was apprehended in Avondale, Penn.

On Thursday, U.S. Marshals arrested Mario Che-Tiul, 34, of Monett, in the an apartment of Gap Newport Pike in Avondale, the same area in which authorities were searching for convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante earlier this month. Che-Tiul is also being housed in the same jail as Cavalcante was, awaiting extradition.

In June, Che-Tiul and six other Barry County inmates allegedly violently attacked two correctional officers at about 11:15 p.m. before fleeing. A warrant was issued for Che-Tiul on June 2, and the fugitive case was delegated to the U.S. Marshals Service Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force in Missouri.

Sheriff Danny Boyd said in June that Che-Tiul lured two correctional officers into his cell to do a blood pressure check, then the inmates attacked and choked the correctional officers until they were unconscious, stealing their keys to escape.

“On Sept. 21, at approximately 12:30 p.m., I was alerted by the U.S. Marshals Service that they had apprehended Mario Che-Tiul in Avondale, Penn.,” Boyd said. “The U.S. Marshals Service advised that Che-Tiul will be held at the Chester County Jail.”

On Thursday morning, members of the Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force in Philadelphia developed information Che-Tiul was at a residence in Avondale. That residence was surrounded by Marshals Service investigators, and Che-Tiul was located in one of the apartments on the property.

Che-Tiul was positively identified and placed under arrest without incident. He was then transported to the Chester County Prison and charged as a “Fugitive of Justice.”

“This latest capture of an escaped prisoner from Missouri should underscore a very clear message, and one that applies globally: our efforts never cease. Ever,” said Eric Gartner, United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Boyd said Che-Tiul will be extradited to Missouri once he has signed all extradition waivers from Pennsylvania.

“Che-Tiul will be transported straight to the Greene County jail in Springfield,” Boyd said. “The Barry County Sheriff`s Office had been in correspondence regularly with the U.S. Marshals services up to the point of apprehension of Che-Tiul. I would like to thank the U.S. Marshals for their continuous efforts to take Che-Tiul into custody.”

This fugitive investigation was a joint effort by the U.S. Marshals Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force, Immigration Customs Enforcement, and the Chester County Criminal Investigative Division.

Shortly after the seven inmates escaped on June 1, Three escapees, Andrew Madewell, 19, of Monett; Harley Wilkins, 29, of Purdy; and Jonathan Saucedo, 31, of Golden, were located after 15-20 minutes in the area of 10th and Harold Streets.

Two more, Derson Pelep, 37, of Monett, and Rolondo Saldivar, 42, of Monett, were apprehended at about 6:30 a.m. near the Cassville Aquatic Center, and a sixth, Axel Agans, 22, of Purdy, turned himself in at about 7:15 a.m.

Che-Tiul was charged in 2022 with first-degree child molestation and incest.

All seven inmates were being held in an area separate from the general population due to being charged with sex crimes or being on the sex offender registry.
