Aug. 2, 1972

Bert Ashens of Cassville has been named manager of Cassville Monument Company by Albert McIntyre of Monett, owner. Ashens will replace W.E. Leonard, of Cassville, who is retiring after having held the position for several years.

Tuesday’s Primary Election attracted a long list of candidates for Barry County Sheriff – 24 total. On the Republican ticket, 12 candidates included: Jim Blackburn, Howard Bounous, Wilbert Shockley, Cecil Clayton, Charles Tate, Walter, “Dude” Mattingly, Jr., Jim Reavis, Vernon Still, Dan Spyres, Jim McNeill, Lloyd Vaught and H.G. Parsons. The 12 candidates running on the Democrat ticket were: Jack Nave, Robert Vance, Gary Stewart, Ray Burnette, Leroy Perkins, Jim O’Neill, Kenneth Ruark, Debbie Johnson, R.A. ‘Gus” Tatum, Bill Daugherty, Virgil Pugh and Lige Frost.

Cassville merchants are throwing a Moonlight Madness Sale this Friday night. It’s scheduled to run from 8 p.m. till 10 p.m. All participating businesses were encouraged to dress in theme clothing, according to Wayne Tomblin, Chamber of Commerce merchants committee chairman.

40 years ago

July 28 1982

Barry County Sheriff Jim Hopkins said his deputies harvested 1,100 marijuana plants near Cato Saturday. Arrested at the scene were Timothy Wood, of Springfield, Mark Seaton, address unknown, and Curtis Town, of Hawaii. At harvest, the crop would be estimated at $1 million. Bond was set at $10,000 each.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene Baker, of Cassville, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Aug. 1 at the Cassville Community Center. Gene Baker and Ruby Dilbeck were in married on July 23, 1932, by Rev. Melvin Henson.

Lloyd Vaught of Cassville is recovering from a farming accident he had last week when his tractor overturned on him. He suffered no broken bones.

Captain Bruce R. Mitchell, USAF, received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal at the North American Defense Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., last week.

July 22, 1992

The Cassville Board of Education authorized a contract to purchase 40 acres of land two blocks north of the campus for $95,000 from Maxine McGruder. The Board is considering a possible relocation of the High School.

John A. Ferris, M.D., announced Monday that he will be closing his practice in Cassville and joining a group practice out of state. He is planning to move to Watertown, Wis. He has had his practice in Cassville for the past six years.

Over 100 people donated blood at the July 20 Red Cross Bloodmobile held at the Cassville Community Center. Delores Hutchen, coordinator of the event, said they had six first-time donors this time.

The Barry County Youth Fair attracted a large crowd this year with a reported attendance of 1,500 people.
