Monett unloads 58 points in first half

It was an embarrassment of riches for the Monett football team (1-1), as the Cubs roared to a 70-0 victory over Strafford (0-2) on Friday.
Monett posted 58 points on the scoreboard in the first half, scoring a touchdown on every drive, plus an interception return for a touchdown.
The Cubs’ defense, which struggled against Nevada in Week 1, stymied the Indians, forcing them backward all night. Strafford finished the first half with -22 total yards of offense, giving up five sacks.
Josie Elias opened the scoring for the Cubs with a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Antoine Smith increased the advantage to 12-0 with 6:22 left in the first quarter with a 50-yard scamper.
Smith reached paydirt a total of four times in the first half, with runs of 50, 8, 27 and 3 yards.
Collin Umfleet scored twice in the first half with a run of 25 yards and a reception of 15.
Alex Meeks provided a first-half touchdown catch and run of 54 yards.
The Cubs put the icing on the cake with a Miles Austin kickoff return 73 yards to the house in the second half.
Brayden Seitz added a 44-yard scoring reception in the fourth quarter to provide the final 70-point margin of victory.
The Cubs racked up 458 yards of offense. Washick was 17-of-27 for 300 yards, while Monett backs chewed up 158 yards on 15 carries.
Monett travels to Aurora on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
