Cassville woman dies at Table Rock
50-year-old felt ill, was transported to fire station
A Cassville woman died on Sunday after swimming in Table Rock Lake.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Leah Moss, 50, of Cassville, was swimming in Table Rock Lake northwest of Point 21, near Viola in Stone County, at about 3 p.m. when she began to feel ill. Moss exited the water and an acquaintance transported her to the Central Crossing Fire Station.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:21 p.m. by Dr. Dustin Gammon, with Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
She was then transported to Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.
Trooper Samuel Carpenter, Patrol public information and education officer, confirmed the incident was a dry drowning, which occurs when water breathed in causes the vocal cords to spasm and close up, shutting off the airways and making it difficult breathe.
This is the seventh drowning report for Troop D of the Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry and Stone.
