Monett woman killed in Hwy. 37 wreck
3 vehicles involved in incident south of Butterfield
A Monett woman died on Tuesday in a wreck at 11:47 a.m. on Highway 37, one mile south of Butterfield.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, John Maddux, 47, of Springfield, was driving a 2009 Freightliner UPS van southbound and failed to yield, turning in front of a southbound 2015 Ford Taurus, being driven by Linda Gunter, 74, of Monett, causing the Ford to strike the rear of the Freightliner. The Freightliner was then pushed into a northbound 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, being driven by Geoffrey Timper, 59, of Crane.
Gunter was transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, and she was pronounced dead at 2:11 p.m. by Dr. Kenneth Larson. A passenger in her vehicle, Sammie Gunter, 42, of Monett, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Cox Monett Hospital. Maddux and Timper were not injured.
Maddux, Timper and Linda Gunter were wearing safety devices, and Sammie Gunter was not. The Freightliner and Ford sustained extensive damage, and the Chevrolet sustained minor damage.
This is the fourth fatality of the month and 50th of the year for Troop D of the Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry.
