Beginners disc golf tournament to offer great deals
The Cassville YMCA is partnering with Dynamic Discs to host a beginners disc golf tournament on June 12, starting at 9 a.m.
The event will start at the Cassville River Birch Prairie Disc Golf Course, located behind the soccer fields at Cassville south park.
Rick Ragsdale, Cassville YMCA director, said the course is a daily new addition to the features in Cassville.
“Steve Walensky, city administrator, went to a parks and recreation trade show a few years back and when he saw them, he decided to get them,” Ragsdale said. “There were some big supporters and users from the beginning, but over the last year, we have seen a huge increase in use.”
Due to closures because of COVID-19, people began using the outdoor, free disc golf course for entertainment.
“We just all started playing,” Ragsdale said. “It is one of the fastest-growing sports nationally.”
Dynamic Discs is hosting this trilogy challenge event as part of their #growthesport movement.
“The event will provide players with top of line starter discs,” he said. “Also, people will be playing in doubles format.”
The cost to register is $35 per person or $70 per two-person team, which includes discs that the players get to keep.
“Those discs retail for about $60 each,” Ragsdale said. “They are high end discs, but beginner friendly. This is a beginners tournament to help increase interest in the sport.”
There are multiple types of discs that each do something different.
“The beginner friendly discs tend to stay in the air longer and stay straighter,” Ragsdale said. “These gold line or tournament plastics are great for durability.”
Ragsdale said the partnership with Dynamic Discs is a great opportunity and being a new community to the sport of disc golf helps solidify that relationship.
“All rewards will be through Dynamic Discs for more equipment,” he said. “We can have up to 80 people in this tournament, or 40 teams.”
Playing in a doubles group is just like scrambles in golf.
“It is always fun, and we play for the best shot,” Ragsdale said. “The YMCA has a good relationship with the city when it comes to the features the city offers its residents. We manage things like the pool and help promote other features, like the disc golf course.”
A beginners tournament is great for people who are new to the sport, but fun for those who are more experienced as well.
“Teams will start in Cassville, then head to Monett,” Ragsdale said. “They will play with their same team the whole day, and we will electronically track the scores.”
Teams will be divided into groups A and B evenly based on scores. So, the top teams will be scored against the other top teams and the bottom teams will only be scored against those of similar skill.
“There will be two full prize packs,” Ragsdale said. “They will be the same, one for group A and one for group B.”
