The Southwest Trap Team competed at the Paul Larson Memorial High School State Shoot in Linn Creek on April 17. More than 250 squads of trapshooters ages of 10-18 came out to compete. Southwest brought two full squads and one partial squad, with several shooting their best scores of the year. Middle schooler Bailey Stephens shot her first 25 straight. The team will be celebrating her accomplishment by shooting her hat at the next practice. The middle school squad placed third in the state with a score of 403/500. The high school squad came up just short of a medal this year with a score of 422/500. “We have 15 good shooters this year, and it will be tough competition for them throughout the rest of the season,” said Heather Ayer, with Southwest. “They are putting in the hard work academically and at the trap range to make this a successful season for the team. Coaches Mike Vining, Larry Hicks and Staci Day are excited to see the improvement each shooter has made so far this season. The shooters are looking forward to the next AIM state shoot in June.” Pictured are the third-place team in State, the Southwest Middle School squad, from left: Bailey Stephens, Devin Hall, Sam Lawrence, Colton Phillips and Case Jennings.
