Wheaton track medals in Monett, Mt. Vernon
New personal bests set at Cub Relays
The Wheaton track and field teams picked up a handful of medals at the Monett and Mt. Vernon meets last week, setting some personal bests along the way.
“We had a slow start this week at Monett, but still managed to earn a few medals,” said Larry Meyer, Wheaton track coach.
The 4x100 relay team of Chad Meyer, Zane Johnson, Michael Hang and Fernando Gonzalez ran their best time so far at 48.6 seconds and took sixth place in Monett. Johnson achieved a personal and school record in the 400-meter at 57.64 seconds, and Zander Dutra set a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles at 20.33 seconds.
“We faced great competition in Mt. Vernon,” said Larry Meyer, Wheaton track coach. “Greenfield showcased an extremely fast runner in the 100-meter, and Aurora had one as well in the 200-meter. Both of these schools took first in these events, just barely overtaking Chad by 0.10 seconds in the 100 and 0.24 seconds in the 200.
“It is amazing on how the smallest amount of time can affect the results of a race. This is why we train so hard during practice.”
Monica Hinojosa was Wheaton’s other medalist that night. She threw 8.92 meters in the shot put, earning fourth place. She nearly broke her personal record in Javelin with a throw of 24.46 meters.
“With her efforts this year she is prepared to compete at districts on May 8 in both events,” Meyer said. “She has a great chance of qualifying for sectionals and state again this year.”
Meyer said Wheaton will have a good group that will qualify for sectionals.
“I am especially looking forward to seeing how our hurdlers do since they are all freshmen and will become the foundation of the Wheaton track and field in the future,” he said.
