Wildcats 1-3 in last week
The Cassville baseball team (7-15) picked up one win Saturday but dropped three other contests since April 27. The Wildcats fell to Lamar 8-2, then dropped a road game at Monett on Thursday, 15-2. In the Monett game, lead-off hitter Corey Thomas tripled on the first at-bat of the game, and he was batted in by an Isaac Hadlow single. However, a 6-run second inning from Monett put the game out of reach. On Saturday, the Wildcats ended a five-game skid with a win over Central (Springfield), 10-4. Cassville then lost to Fair Grove, 20-6. The Big 8 Crossover Game is set for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Tigers split wins
The Exeter baseball team (9-8) stayed above .500 in the last week after topping McAuley Catholic 16-4 but falling to Billings 7-1. Against McAuley, Corey Hilburn led with 4 RBI on the day, and multiple Tigers had 2 hits in the 11-hit showing. Against Billings, the Tigers managed more hits, 9 to Billings’ 5, but struggled to find home plate. Hank Woods pitched 5.2 innings and struck out 6. Exeter plays this week in the Miller Invitational. The Tigers face Pierce City on Thursday.
Purdy softball on to semis
The Purdy softball team (25-1) is on to the Class 1, District 5 semifinals after a 15-0 victory over Wheaton on Monday. Multiple Lady Eagles posted 2 hits apiece, and Lauren Schallert led in RBI with 4. Schallert also pitched all three innings, striking out 8. Purdy added two more wins to their No. 1 in Class 1 ranking in the previous week, defeating Southwest 18-0 in a perfect game from Lauren Schallert, then topping Strafford in a close contest, 3-2. Schallert pitched all five innings, striking out 11 batters and holding the Lady Trojans to no hits or walks. She also led the team in hits with 3 and had 3 RBI. Robyn Schad led the Lady Eagles in RBI with 4. On Friday, Schallert pitched all seven innings against Strafford, striking out 10. She and Jessi Hoppes each had 2 hits, and Annabelle Bowman knocked 2 RBI. Purdy faces No. 5 Billings in the semifinals today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m.
Eagles extend win streak to 6
The Purdy baseball team (15-5) has a six-game win streak going after ripping off five in a row in the last week. On April 27, the Eagles topped Spokane 16-1. On Friday, they defeated East Newton 7-0, and they won a doubleheader on Saturday over Diamond 12-5 and Seneca 7-0. Against Spokane, Jake Brown and Osiel Aldava each had 3 hits, and Aldava added 5 RBI. Brown pitched 4 innings and gave up 3 hits and 1 unearned run, striking out 1. against East Newton, Bosten Goetz and Clay Henderson each had 2 hits. Aldava went five innings with 1 hit allowed and no runs, striking out 5. Against Diamond, Brown led with 2 hits, and seven other Eagles got a hit. Henderson managed 3 RBI, and Brown and Aldava each had 2. Brown also knocked a home run. Brown led in hits in the Seneca win with 2, and Ezequiel Garcia got 3 RBI and a home run. Garcia also went all seven innings, allowing 5 hits and no runs, striking out 5. Purdy played Galena on Monday, earning a 15-0 victory. Travis Hughes, Henderson and Garcia all had 2 hits. Hughes also tallied 4 RBI, and Garcia and Aldava each had 3. Brown pitched all three innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 2. Purdy hits the road today to face Walnut Grove at 5 p.m.
Trojans best Blue Eye, 5-3
The Southwest baseball team (6-7) defeated Blue Eye on Friday, 5-3. Cruz Marquez led with a pair of hits and 3 RBI. Colton Hignite provided the other 2 RBI. Zak Corwin pitched 6.2 innings, striking out 7 batters. The Trojans play in the Miller Invitational this week. They played Lighthouse on Monday and face Sarcoxie on Thursday.
