Wheaton breaks records at Ozark 7
Runners set school, personal bests at meet
The Wheaton track and field team captured multiple first-place finishes, broke school records and set new personal bests during Ozark 7 conference meet.
Zane Johnson placed fifth in the 400-meter race in 58.87. His time dropped a full second off his personal best and broke a school record.
Chad Meyer achieved a new personal and school record in the 100-meter and javelin. Even with a bad start, he ran an 11.3 in the 100-meter race.
In javelin, the officials had to adjust the foul line specifically for him due to the distances he was throwing. In the end, he threw for 45.92 meters, out-throwing second place by a full 18 meters. With this throw, he is now ranked within the top 50 throwers in the state and just barely outside the top 500 nationally on MOMileSplit.com.
Finishing out the boys, Fernando Gonzales earned his first gold in the 110-meter hurdles, and a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles; Zander Dutra earned his first silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles; and Steven Chavez earned his first silver in shot put.
Earning her first gold in javelin with a throw of 25.09 meters for the girls was Monica Hinojosa. She out-threw second place by over 3 meters and then proceeded to earn second place with a 9.46-meter throw in shot put.
Jenny Par earned her first bronze medal as of the year in shot put with a throw of 8.57 meters. Lori McNeill took her first bronze medal of the year in the 400-meter run with a 1:18.84.
Since both groups had a lot of top six finishes, that helped Wheaton earn enough points to place third in conference.
“They have come a long way, and I expect to see stronger runs in the next two weeks,” said Larry Meyer, Wheaton track coach. “We will be back to full strength this week, and everyone is training hard for districts. We [ran] at Monett on Tuesday and Mt. Vernon on Thursday this week. Come out and support your Wheaton Bulldogs.”
