Southwest wins Diamond Invitational
Trojans win 5 events, medal in 10
The Southwest boys track and field team won the Diamond High School Track Invitational last week, finishing second in the 4x400 relay to outdistance second-place Jasper 86-83.
The Trojans also outpaced Diamond, Marionville, Pierce City, and Liberal. The Trojans won five events and medaled in 10. Senior Travis Sickles captured the 2-mile and 800-meter events, and Senior Isaac Starr won the shot put.
Junior Christian Long took the mile, and the 4x800 relay team of Long, Robert Humphries, Caden Uthe, and Otis Rainer also won first.
“You need talent, effort and sometimes a little luck to win a track meet, and we had all of those things at Diamond,” said Steve Voyak, Southwest track coach. “Our seniors and juniors are pretty consistent, but my young athletes really stepped up. We were entered in every event but the open 400 meters and the pole vault, and we ended up scoring in 12 events. It came down to the final two events, and we placed first in the 2-mile and second in the 4x400 relay.”
Other highlights from the day included sophomore Olivia Erwin winning the shot put. Freshman Alexis Raucstadt scored in three events, including a third-place in the high jump. All four relays (4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800) all scored, with Freshman Ezra Sprowes running on three of them. Starr was also third in the discus.
Southwest runs at Reeds Spring this week.
