Vehicle hits Freightliner head-on north of Shell Knob

A Shell Knob woman died Friday in a wreck at 7:52 a.m. on Highway 39, five miles north of Shell Knob.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Tessie Mead, 74, of Shell Knob, was driving a 2017 Nissan Rogue northbound when her vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and struck a 1994 Freightliner FLD120, being driven by Freddy Stephens, 57, of Diamond.

Barry County Coroner Gary Swearingen pronounced Mead dead at the scene at 8:52 a.m. She was transported to Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.

Stephens suffered minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle.

Stephens was wearing a safety device, and Mead was not. The Nissan was totaled, and the Freightliner sustained extensive damage.

This is the 65th fatal wreck of the year for Troop D of the Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry.
