Cassville library wins Reading Club contest

The Barry-Lawrence Regional Library System ran a contest during the Summer Reading Club to see which branches had the readers of the most books. In a close contest, Cassville won for the larger branches. As a reward, award-winning children's author David Harrison of Springfield, the author of 90 works of poetry, fiction and non-fiction, will speak on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Cassville Branch Library.

Southwest preschool hosting screenings

The Southwest school district will host preschool screenings for children ages 3-5. Children who are not eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year should not participate. The screening will be held Aug. 11-12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the K-2 building. For an appointment, people should call the elementary school at 417-826-5411.

Harrell Family Reunion to be held Aug. 16

The Harrell Family Reunion will be held Aug. 16 at the Fairview Community Center. Attendees should bring food and drinks. Lunch will be at 1 p.m.

SONbeam Preschool hosting Open House

Cassville United Methodist Church's SONbeam Preschool will host an Open House on Monday from 6-7 p.m. The teacher is Megan Cox, and the assistant teacher is Gayle LeCompte. For enrollment in the 2015-2016 school year, people may call 417-847-4714. To enroll, the child must be at least three years old by Aug. 1.

Tax sale set for Aug. 24

The Barry County Collector's Office, headed by Collector Janice Varner, is preparing for the annual Barry County Real Estate Delinquent Tax Sale. Missouri law requires land with three years of delinquent taxes be sold on the fourth Monday in August of each year, falling on Aug. 24 this year. The first publication about the sale was printed in the Cassville Democrat on July 22, and copies are available at the collector's office. The tax sale listing can also be viewed at, and will be updated when parcels are paid. Barry County Assessor Sherry Sears will have available for sale two booklets containing parcels that will be offered in the sale. The rural and city booklets will be $20, and the subdivision booklet will also be $20. People may also purchase both for $30. Those interested in purchasing a booklet may call Sears' office at 417-847-4589.

Cassville Community Foundation 
seeking grant applicants

The Cassville Community Foundation is accepting grant applications for the 2015 funding cycle. All not-for-profit, 501c(3) organizations that serve the Cassville community are encouraged to apply. Applications are available at the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce and must be submitted by Sept. 1.

Local church hosting Springfield preacher

Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church will have Brother Larry Lovvorn of Springfield preaching at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9. The church is located at 16722 Highway 248, approximately five miles east of Cassville. For additional information, people may call Pastor Larry Henbest at 417-847-2552.
