All proceeds will benefit Kornerstone's Teen Mom program

Kornerstone Inc. will be hosting a 5K Walk/Run in September in Cassville, with the proceeds from the event benefitting teen moms in Barry County through the Kornerstone Teen Moms program.

Kornerstone Director Marlene Whitham says the 5K is a good, healthy way to get the community involved.

"5Ks are a good way of getting the community involved in the fundraising," she said. "It's also a great way to get people outside of the community involved due to the competitive nature of the event. And, of course, it's a healthy activity that benefits everyone."

Whitham says the proceeds will benefit the entirety of the Teen Mom program, which assists pregnant teens with prenatal education and childhood development, offers doula support for labor and delivery, provides assistance in connecting teens with the needed resources such as baby supplies, and assists in providing transportation to doctor's appointments.

The Teen Mom program assisted 24 teenage mothers and 71 individuals including teen moms, dads and their infants, this past year.

The main goal of the Kornerstone Inc. and Children's Trust Fund, who funds the program, is to prevent child abuse and neglect.

"We're working to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect," Whitham said. "We also do postpartum assessments and monitoring to help the teen parents establish a family unit as well as to make sure there aren't any postpartum issues."

She says they also have educators who teach the teen moms to breastfeed.

According to research shown by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the Choosing the Best program is effective in decreasing teenage sexual activity by 47 percent. Choosing the Best is the abstinence program used by Kornerstone Inc., which partners with Missouri State University in Springfield to provide abstinence education to the local schools.

The 5K Run/Walk will start at 9 a.m. on Sept. 13. The race will start and finish at the Cassville Aquatic Park. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each age category.

Registration forms can be found online at or be picked up at Cassville YMCA, Cassville Chamber of Commerce office or Arvest Bank.

Sponsors for the event include Arvest Bank and Service 1 Federal Credit Union.

"We've done fundraisers in the past, and we decided it was time for a change of pace and a new venue to help raise funds," Whitham said. "We plan on trying to make our 5K an annual event."
