Upcoming Chili and Salsa Cook-off will challenge tasters
The Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Chili and Salsa Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 26 on the square in Cassville. Booths open at 8 a.m. and chili and salsa will be available to sample at noon.
The theme for this year's event is Hillbilly Chili Bash. Prizes will be awarded for the top four winners in both chili and salsa categories. First place winners will receive $150, with second place winners taking home $100. Third place winners will receive $75 and fourth place will receive $50.
"We are very excited to announce we have increased our prize money for chili and salsa cookers this year," said Mindi Artherton, executive director at Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce. "They work very hard on their tasty chili and salsa and we want to reward them for their hard work."
Tasting kits are available to community members at a cost of $2 per kit. Votes will be cast for people's choice chili, people's choice salsa, best decorated booth and most spirited booth. Winner in each category will receive $25.
The Flyin' Buzzards, a bluegrass band, will take the stage at 9 a.m. and feature musicians from across southwest Missouri. Band members include Wayne Clevenger, of McDowell; John Amos, of Crane; Terry Pules, of Exeter; and Duwayne Blevins, of Reeds Spring.
The Pet Parade, sponsored by Herrin Animal Clinic, will kick off at 10 a.m. Participants should meet at the Commerce Bank parking lot at 9:30 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: best dressed, best trick, best ears and best duo. All participants will receive a prize. Prizes for category winners will include a bag of food, valued at $30, a tick treatment, valued at $50 and other prizes.
The second annual pie contest, organized by Cherry Bailey, is also slated to get underway at 10 a.m. Those wishing to participate in this year's event should have their pies at the chamber booth between 7 and 9 a.m.
Pies will be divided into three categories for judging. First place awards will be determined in all three categories, as well as best overall pie. Winners will receive Cassville Cash and tickets to either the fall or Christmas Show.
The fifth annual Chili Dog contest, sponsored by Sonic, will see contestants trying to devour five chili dogs the fastest or eat the most in 12 minutes to win the title of Chili Dog Champion. The winner will receive $100 in cash and a $100 Sonic gift card. Those interested in competing should sign up at the chamber office by noon on Friday, Oct. 25.
Sonic Trick Skaters, Wes Waters, Makayla Terry and Katie Sewell, will perform at 11:30 a.m.
"We are excited to have the addition of the Sonic Trick Skaters to our annual cook-off schedule," Artherton said. "It is always fun to try something new and different. We're thrilled they offered to perform after the chili dog challenge."
The 211 Band will take the stage at noon. Band members Ryan Preddy, Jason Blankenship and Aaron Ennis, recently won the Texaco Country Showdown in Eureka Springs, Ark. They will perform until the end of the day's events.
