Slow start dooms Cassville soccer at Monett

Thursday, October 17, 2013

The Cassville Wildcats soccer team invaded Monett on Oct. 14 with a chance to put a strangle hold on the number one seed in the district tournament.

The Wildcats (5-10) defeated the Cubs (10-5) 5-2 earlier in the season and a second win would secure their top spot.

However, three quick goals by Monett led to a 7-3 Cubs' win.

"We didn't start with the right intensity and communication," said Cassville coach Andrew Hoskins. "We settled in and got a couple of scores back but couldn't overcome the early hole."

Monett strikers Misael Cordero and Jario Rueda teamed up for the Cubs' first three goals.

Cassville's Pafou Vang put a stop to the bleeding by scoring on a 40-yard free kick.

Monett outshot Cassville 12 to 4 in the first half.

The Cubs took a 5-1 lead early in the second half, but Cassville fought back. Kyle Branham buried a 35-yard free kick, narrowing the gap to 5-2. Even after two more Cubs' goals, the Wildcats scratched and clawed to stay in the game. Hard work was rewarded with a beautiful goal by Cassville's Isaiah Herbert in the final 10 minutes.

"Isaiah's goal was a result of some changes we made at halftime," said Hoskins. "Great communication led to the score."

The Wildcats host Carl Junction on Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
