Survivor dinner to be held this Saturday

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

The South Barry County Relay For Life Committee invites all local cancer survivors and their caregivers to attend a special dinner that will be held at the Crowder College Cassville Campus Community Building at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

"The dinner will be for survivors and caregivers only," said Tiffanie Holman, who is serving as chairman for this year's event. "We will have smoked meat and all of the fixing, followed by dessert."

Cassville High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) members have volunteered to help serve survivors and caregivers who attend the event. Several local churches are also assisting with the dinner by preparing side dishes and desserts.

"We will have live musical entertainment during the dinner and luminaria ceremony," said Holman. "The luminaria ceremony will be a little different this year. We will be holding it inside to avoid weather issues, and the lights will be off. There will be music played during the ceremony with a moment of silence following."

Area community members can purchase luminarias prior to or during the event. To purchase a luminaria on-line visit and select Relay For Life of South Barry County. A $5 donations is requested for each luminaria.

"We would encourage the public to attend to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers and remember those we have lost," said Holman.

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people every year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and empower individuals and communities to fight back against the disease. The main goal for this year's local Relay event is to make the night special for survivors and caregivers in the Barry County community.

Survivors and caregivers who plan to attend the special dinner are encouraged to reserve a seat by calling Holman at 847-7183 or Desiree Corn at 342-5023.
