Summer reading program begins next week

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Beginning June 6, registration will open for the Barry Lawrence Regional Library's 2013 summer reading program, which is everyone from preschool age children to adults.

The theme for the 2013 tots and children's reading programs is Dig Into Reading. Children 3 and under are invited to participate in the tots program and children ages 3 to 12 are invited to take part in the children's program.

A representative of Dickerson Park Zoo will speak to children about animals which tunnel burrow and dig. The Cassville YMCA will present Dig into Fitness, and Ronald McDonald will visit the library to talk about recycling. Another activity for the children's program will be "gnome sweet gnome."

"Gnomes are the fun little creatures you find in the garden," said Verna Fry, Cassville Branch Library children's director. "We are going to let them build gnome houses, read books about gnomes, play gnome games such as Gnome May I, Pin the Hat on the Gnome and Away from Home Gnome, which is where participants take a gnome home and take pictures with him at different places."

The teen summer reading program, which is for youth ages 13 to 18, will offer the theme Beneath the Surface. Programs will include Wesley Fox, a ghost chaser from Branson and Beneath the Shroud with Daniel Daniels, a Las Vegas coroner.

The adult reading program's theme is Groundbreaking Reads, and the library will be hosting movies and authors, which are yet to be determined.

The summer reading program will kick off with story-telling songs from folk artist Judy Domeny Bowen, who will visit the Cassville Branch at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6. Domeny Bowen performs with an acoustic guitar, and occasionally a banjo or mountain dulcimer.

Registration for the summer reading program is now open. Programs will be offered through July 25 and conclude with a pool party at the Cassville Aquatic Center. Area residents are not required to pre-register to attend a program or event.

Participants in the summer reading program will be given an incentive sheet and a sign-up sheet. After reading and logging the required number of hours , participants will receive a surprise prize.
