Brett Buchanan, a 2006 graduate of Cassville High School and a junior at University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, was recently awarded a $2,500 Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship. Buchanan, who lives in Golden, was raised on a cattle farm and became interested in veterinary science at a young age. "I've always wanted to be a vet," Buchanan said. "I hope to work in a rural area with mixed animals, both small and large breed." Buchanan has been working this summer with Dr. David Cupps, DVM, of Barry County Veterinary Service in Cassville. "He's done well in spite of the hot weather," Cupps said. "He is catching on quick." Buchanan begins clinical rotations in October and will continue the hands-on portion of his education until his graduation in May 2013. "There is a lot to learn," Buchanan said. "We will be exposed to a majority of common animals in the course of our clinicals." Buchanan hopes to work in rural veterinary medicine upon his graduation. Buchanan, who is the son of Danny and Carrie Buchanan, was chosen for the Pfizer Scholarship from a pool of over 1,500 applicants from around the United States.
