The Barry County Scholarship Committee raised $10,450 at its second annual heifer auction, which was held at the Cassville High School FFA Show Barn on May 14. The funds allowed the committee to award seven scholarships to area students.

The following students received $1,000 scholarships this year: Duell Westpheling and Douglas Cope, from Cassville High School; Darren Medley, Sarah DeShazer and Krystyn Harris, from Wheaton High School; and Jamie Gundel and Jessica Pendergraft, from Southwest High School.

During the auction on Saturday, the Barry County Scholarship Committee sold 21 donated beef heifers. The following individuals donated heifers for this year's event: Jim Fohn; Carroll Craig; Jim Phelps; Patricia Fordyce; Dennis Epperly; Wayne Hendrix; Richard Mitchell; Gary Fields; Dee McGruder; Larry Julian; and Cherry Warren.

In addition to raising funds for the committee's annual scholarship awards, the heifer auction will benefit the 2011 Barry County Fair. The committee will donate 10 percent of the funds raised through the heifer auction to the Barry County Fair Board to be used for premium money awards.

The Barry County Scholarship Committee founding and current members include: Epperly, president; Hendrix, secretary; Julian, treasurer; and Fohn, Craig and Spiz Stephens, members.

Barry County Scholarship applications were available at all local schools during the 2010-11 school year. Recipients were selected by the Barry County Scholarship Committee.
