Vacation surprise

Thursday, May 5, 2011
In April, a group of southwest Missouri residents received an unexpected surprise while visiting Washington, D.C., with Making Memories Tours, which is based in Washburn. During a stop at the Lincoln Memorial, the group had the opportunity to see President Barack Obama, who was visiting the historic site in an effort to show that national parks, monuments and museums were open for business one day after a federal government shutdown was narrowly avoided. In the photo above, Obama waves to the crowd gathered at the Lincoln Memorial. Pictured below, from left, are: Jerry Varner, Making Memories Tours president, of Washburn; Wayne and Jane Smith, of Aurora; Larry and Kay Balmas, of Monett; Joe and Virginia Devereaux, of Galena; Charles and Linda Balmas and Arnold and Colleen Evans, all of Monett; Charles Wells and Dot Smyth, of Bella Vista, Ark.; Shirley Barganier, of Cassville; Alice Varner, of Washburn; Ruth Dickens, of Neosho; Nobel and Diane Hargett, of Monett; and Mike and Beverly Teigland, of Berryville, Ark.
