Barry County finally saw some basketball Monday night. The Monett Lady Cubs brought their 16-5 record to Cassville to play against the Lady Wildcats in a Big 8 Conference bragging rights contest. While the two teams have headed in different directions for most of the season, they staged a border war in the Cassville gym that wasn't decided until the final minutes, as Monett escaped with a 49-43 victory.

Cassville's Jaime Everett scored a game-high 17 points as the Lady Wildcats flirted with a monumental upset before falling late against Monett.

Cassville fell behind early but trailed by only 18-16 after one quarter of play. Although Monett's Jenny Frazier scored 10 points in the paint against the Cassville zone, Hunter Glouse was shut out in the period by the rotation of Everett, Emily Speakman and Cari Vollenweider.

After trailing by as many as a half dozen points in the first quarter, Cassville tied the game at 18-18 when Everett drained a jumper from the free-throw line to start the second period. Amanda McKinney regained the lead for Monett, but Kennadi Howard scored with an offensive board to earn another tie at 20-20.

The Lady Cubs finished the half with a 13-2 run that left Cassville reeling. McKinney hit the first trey of the game as Monett scored nine unanswered points, and then Glouse finally made the scorebook with a fast break layup in the final minute of the period. Everett wisely conceded the bucket to the Monett star rather than risk picking up her third foul.

The Lady Cubs carried a 33-22 lead to the dressing room at halftime.

Cassville squeezed out a 10-7 advantage in a low-scoring third quarter, cutting the lead to 40-32 at the final break. Howard and Speakman both scored 4 points for Cassville in the period, while Glouse scored 4 and Madison Carlin canned a long trey from the corner for Monett.

Everett willed in a floater in the lane to start the fourth quarter and then drew a foul on Frazier while dropping a turnaround jumper in the lane. Everett's perfect free throw pulled Cassville within one possession, trailing by just 40-37 with 4:45 left in the contest.

But Carlin, Glouse and McKinney all scored to fuel a 6-2 mini-run for Monett, and the visitors stretched the lead back to 46-39 with just two minutes remaining.

Howard hit a pair of free throws for Cassville and added a late jumper from the right wing, but the Lady Cubs hit seven of nine free-throw attempts in the quarter to seal the 49-43 victory.

Cassville scorers: Jaime Everett, 17; Kennadi Howard, 12; Emily Speakman, 8; Cari Vollenweider, 4; and Sydney Curnes, 2.

Monett scorers: Amanda McKinney, 11; Hunter Glouse, 11; Jenny Frazier, 10; Madison Carlin, 9; and Dedre Beckett, 8.

Monett also won the JV contest, 45-25. Anna Cloud led the Lady Cubs with 15 points, and Curnes scored 11 for Cassville.
