SW athletes set new track marks

Codie Harmon and Caleb Mitchell both sat out the 2007 track season after suffering leg injuries during basketball. It only took two meets in 2008 for Southwest's talented pair to break school records.

Harmon, a senior, claimed third place in the long jump at Carthage, and his leap of 20' 3" broke the mark set by Bobby Fuller back in 1992 by an inch. Harmon also placed second in the triple jump event.

Mitchell, a junior, blazed into the lead of the 800-meter race at the end of the first lap and grudgingly surrendered the lead to eventual winner John Williams, of East Newton, with 80 meters remaining. While a Carthage runner outleaned Mitchell at the tape, his third place time of 2:02.2 eclipsed the Southwest record of 2:02.55 set by Cody Sapp in 2001.

At a meet interrupted by rain, lightning, wind and hail, the records were even more impressive.

"While I expected both Caleb and Codie to set records this year, I was surprised that they did it so early in the season," said Coach Lee Stubblefield.
