Barry County Youth Camp gearing up for summer fun
2022 Camp theme is Barnyard Buddies
Organizers of the annual Barry County Youth Camp are gearing up for their 57th year of making dreams come true for children ages 7-10 in Barry County who otherwise might not have the opportunity to attend a summer camp.
This year’s theme is Barnyard Buddies, and each year, 100 area children are invited to attend the no-cost, four-day camp, where organizers and camp counselors supervise games, hiking adventures, swimming, educational field trips and special sessions to discuss safety, peer pressure, cooperation and more. This year’s event is set for May 31 through June 3 at Camp Smokey, located inside Roaring River State Park near Cassville.
On the final night of camp, youth have the opportunity to attend Carnival Night, where they can try their hands at ring tossing, balloon popping, take aim at a shooting gallery and more.
Camp Cooks Greg Davis, Josh Osterloh and Thomas Willis will make sure meals are kid-friendly and filling.
A nurse will also be on site for the four-day event.
“None of this would be possible without the generous support of local businesses, organizations and individuals who donate their time, money, energy and items that the camp needs each year,” said Jane James, co-chairman. “The cost of hosting one child for the four-day camp is $150. We spend hours every year in the weeks before camp to gather up the supplies we need and organize the programs and activities.”
A storage unit fire in June 2020 resulted in the total loss of all the organization’s supplies and equipment. In this first year of hosting a full camp since that loss, organizers find they are in need of bath towels, twin-sized lightweight fleece blankets, age appropriate summer wear for boys and girls age 7 to 10, and, most importantly, additional volunteer camp counselors to supervise campers 24 hours a day.
“We are always happy to deceive monetary donations as well,” James said. “We often find ourselves making daily trips to shop for additional items we need.”
Monetary contributions to support the camp may be mailed to: Barry County Youth Camp, P.O. Box 254, Monett, MO, 65708. To make donations or for more information on the Barry County Youth Camp, people may call James at 417-235-9946, or Gail Ellis at 417-235-2151.
Those who shop Amazon.com may donate to the camp under the charitable donations tab “Barry County Youth Camp.” Items collected locally may be dropped off at Bruce Willis’ garage, located at 8th and Broadway in Monett.
