Southwest trap starts season with bang

The Southwest Trap Team has started the year off with a bang at the first competition of the season at Ozark Shooters Sports Complex in Walnut Shade on March 6. Three squads competed this year. Competitors that walked away with medals were: Colten Phillips, Sub Jr. Gold; Levi Carden, Sub Jr. Bronze; Lilly Wolf, Ladies Gold; and Bailey Stephens, Ladies Bronze. The next weekend, on March 13, the team went to an AIM Shoot in Bella Vista, Ark. A total of 77 shooters participated in the event. Six of the Southwest team members were in the top 12. The results are as follows: Ty Howard, first; Samuel Jennings, second; Lily Wolf, 6th; Colton Phillips, 9th; Olivia Ayer, 9th; Caleb Ayer, 12th; Bailey Stephens, 30th; and Devin Hall, 30th. Many shooters shot their personal best. On April 10, the team will return to Bella Vista for an ATA shoot.

The Southwest softball team (1-3) played two games on Friday and two on Saturday in the Sarcoxie tournament, taking home one win on the weekend. The Lady Trojans fell to Sarcoxie, 9-3, but bounced back with a win over Miller, 9-5. Saturday was a tougher day, with losses coming at the hands of West County, 16-1, and Pierce City, 11-1. Against Sarcoxie, Anna Church and Saige Miller led with 2 hits each, and Miller had 2 RBI. Against the Lady Cardinals, Southwest was down 5-0 after three innings, but rallied for a 7-run fifth to get the win. Natalie Johnson, Riley Flippo and Alli Fosse each had 2 hits, with Fosse and Cloe Brattin delivering 2 RBI each. Against West County, Fosse on the mound had a pair of strikeouts. She earned another 3 in two innings against Pierce City, and Church struck an RBI in the game. Southwest returns to action on Thursday, hosting Blue Eye at 5 p.m.
