Cassville 113-pounder takes first at Monett Wrestling Tournament

The Cassville wrestling team took seven wrestlers to the 50th Annual Monett Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, and the lightest member of the team came home with the heaviest neck.

Kurt Deaver, a 113-pounds junior, went undefeated in his five-man round robin bracket, pinning each opponent in 2:41, 1:25, 1:34 and 36 seconds.

His gold medal was followed by a silver for 132-pound junior Akhilleus Arguelles, winning all of his round robin matches by fall and meeting Pleasant Hill’s Sam Ewing, two-time state champion, in the final match. At one minute in, Ewing scored a takedown, and 31 seconds later, Arguelles was pinned.

Also placing for the Wildcats was 160-pound junior Jake Anthonysz, who won his first two matches by technical fall, but then lost a 15-7 major decision to Oak Grove’s Carson Smith in the semifinals.

In the Wildcats’ final match of the day, Anthonysz put on a show against Willard’s Justin McHenry, scoring a takedown in the first two periods and winning the match 12-1 when he pinned McHenry at 2:15.

As a team, the Wildcats finished 10th out of 20 teams with 113 points. Pleasant Hill owned the tournament with 312.5 points, and Willard was second with 249 points.

Nathan Fortner, Cassville wrestling coach, said his team wrestled well at the tournament.

“We did well, but there’s always room for improvement,” he said. “It was great to get Kurt back on the mat, and he told me that this was his first championship in his entire life, so he was really excited about it. Jake ran into a kid that was state-ranked, and I think we can close that gap with him and beat him later this season.

“Akhilleus had a great tournament with some tough competition. He was good on his feet in that championship match against the two-time state champ, but he gave up his arms and got put on his back.”

Fortner said he also was impressed with his younger wrestlers, as a few freshmen were thrown into the mix Saturday. Bradley Stumpff took third in the 113-pound division with Deaver, Jaret Hinson took seventh place at 120 pounds and Hunter Morris finished ninth at 152 pounds.

Looking ahead, Fortner said the team is getting to where it needs to be as districts come calling.

“It’s a process, and you have to stick to it,” Fortner said. “You cannot take any days off if you want to place at state.”

Fortner said he’s also excited for the team to get Matthew Whittenburg back in action this week.
