Cassville brings home 3 firsts, 9 top-6 finishes

When the Cassville girls wrestling team enters a gym for a tournament, the Lady Wildcats expect to win.

That is what happened on Saturday, as the Cassville team won the Midwest Materials Seneca Girls Tourney handily, bringing home three firsts, nine total top-6 finishes and scoring 206.5 total points to runner-up Nevada’s 147 and third place Seneca’s 112.5.

First-place medals went to Annie Moore at 115 pounds, Kailey Artherton at 120 pounds and Hailey Roark at 130 pounds.

Moore won all her matches by fall, the longest of which took 1:08. Artherton only had three matches, winning each by fall, and Roark also had three, winning the first by fall, semifinals by a major devision and championship by fall.

“This is the expectation now,” said Nathan Fortner, Cassville wrestling coach. “We go into every tournament with the attitude that we will dominate and win it. That attitude has built confidence in the girls, and they are a close group. When one of them gets a pin train going, they all feed off one another and it’s an amazing thing to watch.”

Taylor Glidewell, at 194 pounds, came up just short of a title, pinned in the championship to Nevada’s Taylor Thompson, despite leading the match 6-4 in the second period.

Jhandi Shears, a collegiate soccer signee and first-year wrestler, won her first medal of the season after taking a 9-7 decision over Pittsburg’s Kayann Humble in the 100-pound bracket. Shears scored a pair of takedowns in the third period to secure the victory.

“Shears got her first medal, and she has gotten better every time she steps on the mat,” Fortner said. “She has a chance to qualify for state as a first-year wrestler if she can keep it up.”

Kelsey Harris, at 110 pounds, took third with a pin of Nevada’s Jade Feller in 39 seconds, and Ryleigh Burnett, at 174 pounds, beat Springdale Har-Ber’s Archer Jones with a pin in 2:51 to also take bronze.

Other top-six finishes included a fifth for Haley Morse at 141 pounds and a sixth for Breanna Gordon at 125 pounds.

“This is the bar we have set,” Fortner said. “The expectations when we step on the mat do not change, and going forward, we want to be healthy and have fun. Coaches and officials have commented to me that they notice our girls having fun, and it’s contagious. Everyone wants to be around them.”
