Wildcats on three-game heater
The Cassville boys basketball team (6-7) has reeled off three consecutive wins to start 2022. After going 0-3 at the Neosho Holiday Classic, Cassville traveled to Reeds Spring on Jan. 4 and picked up a 51-48 win. The Wildcats then returned home and defeated Wheaton, 58-49 on Friday, then on Saturday earned another victory, 41-39 over Miami (Okla.). Cassville hosted Seneca on Tuesday, with results not available at presstime. The Wildcats hit the road on Friday, heading to Southwest.
Cassville girls 2-0 to start 2022
The Cassville girls basketball team (10-4) started the new year off with two victories, a 39-27 road win over Purdy and a 48-34 home victory over Miami (Okla.). In the Jan. 4 Purdy game, the Lady Wildcats roared to a 19-1 lead after the first quarter. Cassville scored 17 points off turnovers to Purdy’s 3, and the Lady Wildcats only turned the ball over 8 times to the Lady Eagles’ 24. Sharayah Seymour double-doubled with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Marianne McCrackin scored 11 points. Riley Morris pulled in a dozen boards, and Pazlee Burbridge recorded 11 deflections. Against Miami, Cassville fell behind 12-4 after one, but rallied in the remaining frames to push to victory. Cassville shot 35.3 percent from the floor and 21.4 percent from 3-point range. The game was, however, a sloppy one, with Miami committing 33 turnovers and Cassville 32. Morris led the day with 17 points and 11 rebounds, another double-double for the Lady Wildcats. Seymour contributed 14 points and 6 steals, and McCrackin had 9 points and 5 steals. Cassville hosted Seneca on Tuesday, with results not available at presstime. The Lady Wildcats host Lamar on Thursday.
Lady Eagles 0-2 in new year
The Purdy girls basketball team (1-11) opened the year with a pair of losses. The Lady Eagles fell to Cassville on Jan. 4, 39-27, and to Crane on Jan. 6, 64-13. In the Cassville game, Jessi Hoppes, Raeley Henderson and Kavery Postlewait each tallied 5 points. Hadley Hughes added 10 rebounds.
Exeter teams back in action
The Exeter basketball teams returned to action on Jan. 4 against Galena, with the boys (4-8), falling 63-42, but bouncing back on Friday with a 66-39 win over Blue Eye. The Lady Tigers (0-9) also fell to Galena, 21-13, then on Thursday lost to Marionville, 59-18. The Tigers will host Diamond next on Friday, and the Lady Tigers hosted New Covenant on Tuesday and will play in the Galena Lady Bear Winter Classic starting on Jan. 20.
Purdy downed by Aurora in return to hardwood
The Purdy boys basketball team (6-7) had 17 days between its last two games, and the Eagles returned to the hardwood on Friday with a 57-44 loss to Aurora. Purdy led after the first quarter, 14-6, but the tables turned in the second, as the Eagles were outscored 18-2 to go behind by 8 at the break. Aurora’s 22-point third quarter put the game away. The Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the field and 27.58 percent from 3-point land. Purdy out-rebounded Aurora, 42-35, but the Eagles’ 27 turnovers led to 24 points for the Houn’ Dawgs. Jake Young and Dax Henry led the Eagles with 8 points each, and Eli Webb added 7. Eight total players found the scorebook for Purdy. The Eagles traveled to College Heights on Tuesday, with results not available at presstime. They return home on Friday to host Sparta for Homecoming.
Southwest teams split games
The Southwest boys basketball team (6-6) rang in 2022 with a win, defeating Wheaton 77-26 on Thursday. The Lady Trojans (2-9) dropped their first contest of 2022 to Aurora on Jan. 4, 37-23. Both teams played on Tuesday, the boys at Sarcoxie and girls at home against Thomas Jefferson. The Trojans will host Verona on Thursday, and the Lady Trojans travel to East Newton.
