Cassville girls cross country wins Monett meet, 2nd in Hollister

In the last three meets, the Cassville girls cross country team has been silver or better, and the Lady Wildcats hope to continue channeling those results and turn them into a team bid to state.

The Cassville girls cross country team earned a first-place finish in last week in the Class 1-3 division of the Monett Richard “Whitey” Mettlach Invitational.

Annie Moore led the Lady Wildcats with a fourth-place finish in 23:07, and Jolie Evans was next to cross the finish line in 23:27.

Another wave of Cassville runners came in two minutes later. Marianne McCrackin finished 12th in 25:32, Dakotah Anderson was 14th in 25:40 and Tori Mitchell rounded out the winning squad with a 16th place finish in 25:55.

Prior to that meet, the Lady Wildcats were second as a team in Seneca, and on Thursday, Cassville ran against some district opponents in Hollister and took another silver.

“Monett was a bigger race and we ran on the same course with some Class 5 schools,” said Courtney Kirk, Cassville cross country coach. “Even though the results were split for Classes 1-3 and 5-6, we were still successful in running with those bigger schools.

“We followed that up with the second place in Hollister, where we saw some teams that are in our district who we had not seen yet.”

Cassville finished just behind Strafford in that meet, falling by 5 points. Evans led the Lady Wildcats this time, finishing in 21:09, good for second place. Moore took fifth in 21:51. McCrackin was 25th in 24:17, Mitchell was 28th in 24:31, Anderson was 31st in 25:02 and Elizabeth Butler took 59th in 30:10.

“I think we are meeting expectations right now,” Kirk said. “They set their goals early on and are working hard to accomplish them. The goal is always to make state, and they switched it this year so we are in a bigger district.”

Cassville is in Class 3, District 2, which houses a whopping 23 teams. Last year was an eight-district, 10-team division, compared to this year’s four districts and more than 20 teams in each.

“The top four teams and 30 runners from districts will go to state, so we are hoping for one of those top four spots to take everyone,” Kirk said. “There’s definitely still work to be done, especially since our district so so big. “But, I think it’s a goal we can reach.”

Athletes to watch on the team include the top pair of juniors, Evans and Moore, who have finished no worse than sixth in every race. In Seneca, Evans was fourth and Moore sixth, in Monett Moore swapped the finish and got fourth and Evans took fifth, and Evans returned the favor in Hollister by taking second and Moore taking fifth.

“They are really good friends, but they are competitive,” Kirk said. “It’s nice because the run together in practice, but they don’t buddy run — they push one another. At meets, there’s a little friendly competition between them, but that’s good for them.”

Cassville hits the road for its next meet, traveling to Lamar on Tuesday.
