Southwest Volleyfest returns for 38th installment
10 teams to compete for tournament title
Southwest High School will host the 38th annual Volleyfest Tournament on Oct. 2 in Washburn, with 10 teams competing for the title.
Along with Southwest, teams participating include: Crane, Verona, Wheaton, Exeter, Gentry (Ark.), and the defending champions from Pierce City. Spokane, Thomas Jefferson, and School of the Ozarks are in the event for the first time. Games begin at 8 a.m.
“Anything that has been going on for almost four decades has some tradition,” said Steve Voyak, Southwest volleyball coach organizing the event for the 19th time. “We almost had to cancel last year because of COVID-19, but we had six teams and made it happen with social distancing and disinfecting volleyballs between serves. It was strange, but it’s now all part of the history of Volleyfest.”
Each team plays four matches in pool play. Following that, the bottom team in each pool is eliminated. The third- and fourth-place teams will then play for 7th and 5th place, while the top two in each pool will advance to the championship bracket. The semifinals will start around 4 p.m.
“We also do a unique T-shirt design that includes all the names of the players,” Voyak said. “This year, it’s a word search like the kids do at school sometimes.”
Coaches will also vote for a 7-person All-Tournament Team. The cost to watch the action is $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens.
