Soil and Crops Conference planned
First Christian Church to host annual event
The University of Missouri Extension of Barry County will host an in-person Soil and Crops Conference in Cassville on Feb. 25, beginning with supper at 6 p.m.
Following a catered supper from John Sullivan, State Beef Specialist for the University of Missouri Dr. Eric Bailey, will kick start the evening with “How to start your stocker cattle operation.”
“There’s a huge opportunity for folks to maximize the use of their acreage,” Bailey said. “Stockers could be the solution to both forage management and maximizing your bottom line, when well managed.”
Second up is Elizabeth Picking, MU Extension field specialist in livestock. She will help us understand what happens throughout a cow’s pregnancy. Dam management through this period can help improve offspring performance. Coming off the 2020 drought there are important details associated with your herd’s nutrition and fetal programming you won’t want to miss.
Tim Schnakenberg, field specialist in agronomy for MU Extension will wrap up the night with the presentation, “Johnsongrass: the good, bad and the ugly.” Johnsongrass can be both a blessing and a curse during the hot months of the year. Come learn how to effectively manage this forage for your cow herd.
“There’s something for everyone this year, those who run mamas, folks who want to better understand stocker potentials and forage managers,” said Reagan Bluel, dairy specialist for MU Extension in Barry County. “We hope you’ll reserve your spot at one of the only in-person events this winter offered by MU Extension.”
The Extension is asking producers in attendance to provide $5 preregistration fee. To pay online, people may visit extension.missouri.edu/barry, click on “events” and search “Barry Co. Soil and Crops” or in person by sending a $5 check and details about who will be attending to the Stone County extension center (P.O. Box 345, Galena, MO 65656). Preregistration must be complete by Feb. 23.
Unfortunately, walk-ins cannot be accepted the night of the event this year. Additional COVID-19 considerations: Please RSVP to ensure adequate social distancing can be accommodated. We ask everyone to please mask when not eating or drinking. For additional information, please call 417-357-6812.
