Wildcats on to semifinals
Cassville tops Buffalo Saturday, 41-16
The Wildcats used another powerful second half of play to propel themselves to the state semifinals with a 41-16 win over Buffalo at home Saturday.
Cassville started the game strong, forcing a three-and-out and a punt. The Wildcats then went 61 yards in 5 plays, with Jericho Farris punching in the opening score on a 4-yard run.
The Bisons got moving on their next drive, but stalled and punted again. The Wildcats then struggled, and a bad snap on a punt went over Drake Reese’s head and through the end zone for a safety.
Another Buffalo punt was returned by the Wildcats to the 49, a drive that ended with quarterback Hayden Sink pushing the line in from 2 out.
Buffalo pulled the score within 5 with a 15-yard pass and dive into the end zone.
The Wildcats added another score at the end of the second half, punching in another Sink 2-yarder to take a 20-9 lead into the break.
Buffalo recovered an onside kick to start the second half, then converted on the drive to bring the deficit to 4, but they did not get any closer to taking the lead.
Zach Coenen put an exclamation point on the game with a 74-yard touchdown run, then the Wildcats got the ball back and converted again. From about the 8, Sink dropped the ball on a handoff but recovered, then he hit the line at the 5 and pushed his way into paydirt to go up 34-16 with 1:14 left in the third.
Coenen added another 14-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
The Wildcats will face Maryville in the semifinals. Time, date and location are to be determined.
