Southwest volleyball plays 11 games in busy week

The Southwest volleyball team played 11 games last week, winning six of them and finishing fourth in its 37th Annual Volleyfest Tournament.

Southwest beat Hurley in a 5-set marathon, winning the final three sets to start the week, and followed that by downing Gentry (Ark.) the following night.

The biggest victory of the week came against SWCL Conference foe Galena 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 16-14.

“It was one of the closest and most exciting matches in my 18 years in the game,” said Steve Voyak, Southwest Coach. “With the score 14-14 in the final set, the two teams had played 228 points, with both teams earning 114.”

The match ended dramatically with a block/kill by Junior middle Olivia Ayer.

The Lady Trojans played a doubleheader Friday night at its Pink Out, losing to Crane but defeating Exeter. Southwest beat Verona and Exeter before falling to Crane in the third-place game 25-18, 18-25, 25-17. The team was led by seniors Bonnie Robbins, Khloe Holder and Karma Romine.

“We really rely on our seniors, but all of our girls picked it up, especially since they played eight games in 22 hours,” Voyak said.

Southwest finishes the season with games against Billings, Wheaton and Thomas Jefferson this week.
