David Ellis Eden, M.D., 79, passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, at his home in Driftwood, Texas.

He was born Oct. 15, 1940, in Purdy, to parents Waldo and Ruth (Robbins) Eden. On Jan. 6, 1971, in Rockdale, Md., he was united in marriage to Rahel JoAnn Burke, who survives. Also surviving are son, Michael David Eden and wife Leslie Coleman of Driftwood, Texas; daughter Jennifer Eden Aldrete and husband Jorge Aldrete of Driftwood, Texas; his former wife, Juanita Fox, husband D’Arcy Fox, and son Sam Fox of St. Louis; three daughters, Amber Denise Eden Matassa and Michael Matassa of Long Island, N.Y., Carmen Alison Eden of St. Louis, and Amanda Eden Fajuri and husband Sami Fajuri of Chicago, Ill.; brother Jonathan Wayne Eden and wife Tammy Eden of Bastrop, Texas; sister Mary Jeanette Cowherd of Purdy; bother-in-law Joe Hamilton of Marshall; and nine grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents Waldo and Ruth Eden, brother Dr. James Eden, sister Martha Hamilton; brother-in-law Ernest Cowherd, and one grandson.

He grew up in Purdy, and graduated in 1958. In 1962, he received his BA from University of Missouri in Columbia and continued there to receive his medical degree in 1967. He served his internship at Triple Army Medical Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. After his internship he joined the U.S. Army and worked in the Third Surgical Hospital in Can Tho, Vietnam, where he met his wife Rahel. From 1970 until 1973, David completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He then moved to Austin, Texas, and helped start Capital Anesthesia Association (CAA) with long-time friend Dr. Denis Bowyer, and members of his Walter Reed Residency class. For 19 years, he was Chief of Anesthesia at Seton Medical Center, and for several years was president of Capital Anesthesia Association. He was named by Seton OB as “Father of the Epidural” and was named President Emeritus for Life by Capital of Anesthesia Association. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Butterfield, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville. John Cowherd will conduct the services.
