A fourth place finish was not exactly what the Cassville soccer team had in mind as it opened the 2020 campaign with its home tournament, but the team was encouraged by its play over the three-game series.

“Overall, I think we played good,” said Jake Forste, Cassville coach. “In each of the games, we gave up a goal in the final 15 minutes. When you do that, it forces you to change the way you want to play. For our team, it is important that we shut those goals down and go into half tied. That way, we are making adjustments in the mid-part or second half instead of changing in the first half.”

The Wildcats were not shielded from the expectations of their coach either.

“Of the six halves we played, I would say we won four of them,” Forste said. “Each one of our games was winnable, and to go 1-2 is, frankly, a bit disappointing, but we will learn from this and get better.”

Cassville wrapped up its soccer tournament Saturday. McDonald County won the championship over Aurora, 1-0. New Covenant took third place with a 3-0 win over Cassville, and Kickapoo’s C team finished fifth with a 7-1 win over the Cassville junior varsity.
