Bob Mitchell: Overseas look at COVID virus

Wednesday, August 19, 2020

Americans have had about all the looks and results of the virus that has spread worldwide, but through communication with a former member of the Cassville R-4 faculty, there are a couple of twists of interest.

The provider of information is Sandy Cullers, now a resident just down the street from us and across the street from Joan Ellis. She has remained in contract with some folks in Australia for a number of years and the individual has visited her in the Ozarks.

Sandy is a leader in this Elfindale retirement community, having lived here at Creekside for seven years, with some of the residents referring to her as “chief Sandy.” She has knowledge about most of the folks in the community and affords assistance in many ways to many of the retirees living here.

Australian restrictions

In a recent communication from the western Pacific, Sandy’s friend noted they were under the identical restrictions as in this country, although possibly following them closer than in the U.S. She stated in one letter that she possibly could come to this country for a visit were in not for a couple of restrictions.

First, she would have a difficult time getting into this country. And, then strange for the situation, she would have to have permission from a member of their parliament to make the trip. Then, on return to Australia, there would be permission required to return to her home.

For Americans we’re fortunate to not be in a situation of having the favor of our government people to make some of the moves we might choose to make.

Remembering Sandy

To bring your memory up to speed on Sandy, she taught in Cassville from 1979 through 1990 first in the history department and then became the librarian.

The native of the Kansas City area took a big step in her life during the period 1998 to 2000 when she was teaching in China. During this period many of her experiences were related back to these parts and published in local media.

Other travels in her experience came when she and Sharon Farrow made a trip to New Zealand. This country, by the way, possibly maintains the most strict of restrictions anywhere during this pandemic.

Current observations

From the most recent news reports available on virus situations, it would appear from my observations that the urgings from D.C. that schools start immediately is another foolish move. Even in states where the governors have been following the president’s lead, there are changes being made and the cautions going into force are those suggested by the professional people of science and medicine.

Heavy instances of the virus are being reported with young people who have been associated with the opening of schools during these times of pandemic.

There is no doubt in my mind that no economy or other instance is worth the chance of expanding or extending the run of this disease.

In case you haven’t paid that much attention to the situation, there are more deaths under this virus today than the entire population of Springfield.

Think about this

We have discovered there are some very real advantages for those of you residing in Cassville.

One became quite evident to us recently when a change of Sue’s medication source where we now live sold to a well-known corporate organization and her prescription was transferred to their pharmacy.

Going to their drive-through facility at one of their many establishments in the city, we both nearly fell out of the pickup when we were informed of the price.

The same prescription, used several years had been priced at $30 in Cassville, the charge in Springfield was $103! Needless to say we won’t be back in their place of business. It’s no wonder there are several investigations into the drug producing, distribution and sales industry. The next thing to hit the public will be virus shots that will be required when a new development becomes reality. Hopefully, that day will come with haste for the safety of mankind!

Off the spike

Did you realize it is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open? Try it sometime and see if you are unusual.

For you lovers of peanut butter, did you realize that peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite?

A jiffy is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. It’s not original with “Ozarkeese” after all.

All 50 states are listed across the top of the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the $5 bill.
