Power of Pink powers on
Banquet canceled, walk/run and auction to go on
The 10th annual Power of Pink event scheduled for Saturday at Wheaton’s City Park will go on as scheduled, according to Power of Pink Founder Janice McCracken.
“We will not be able to have the banquet [on Friday night] because of the governor’s guidelines, but we will do the walk and the auction on Saturday in the park,” McCracken said. “Being our 10th anniversary, it’s a little depressing we can’t do the banquet and go the whole nine yards, but we are doing the best we can.”
People may still register on the day of the event, with registration opening at 8 a.m. The live auction will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk should start at about 9 a.m.
“We are going to try to keep it as close to 9 a.m. as possible,” McCracken said. “Since there’s no banquet, items we would sell at an auction then will be included in the park auction.”
McCracken said social distancing is encouraged, and all food at the event will be pre-wrapped, and walkers will receive pre-made bagged lunches after the event.
Roger Brock, Barry County Health Department administrator, said due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) concerns, people should follow local and state guidelines, which includes 6 feet of distance between family units and no more than 10 people in a family unit.
McCracken said signups on Monday numbered about 200.
“But, I’m still getting calls and texts constantly from people asking if they can still register,” she said. “I think we will have a good turnout because the weather will be fantastic.”
In 2010, the Power of Pink mission was born in the midst of a rodeo with the purpose of helping local women battling breast cancer. In the past 10 years, not counting the upcoming event, Power of Pink has raised $188,041.49 for 32 women.
