Dr. John Philip Baumgardt
Dr. John Philip Baumgardt, 93, of Cassville, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, at Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett. He was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Kansas City, the son of Harold and Frieda Clara (Timken) Baumgardt.
He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Cassville. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later received his PhD in botany from the University of Missouri, becoming one of the top five botanists in the world. He authored several books on horticulture. He was a professor at the University of Missouri and served as the director of the Parks Department in Kansas City.
There are no immediate survivors, but he had special friends, Larry and Kathy Westpheling and their children who referred to him as grandpa Baumgardt, also his friend, Christa Hallett.
Services were held Feb. 29 at White Funeral Home, Cassville. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cassville
