Cassville taking lumps, but seeing growth

The result was a 54-27 wrestling loss for Cassville against No. 1 ranked Monett on Thursday, but for Cassville Coach Nathan Fortner, the night’s competition gave a reason to be pleased.

“With this team, they’re fighters,” Fortner said. “Half the team is freshmen, and the other half is sophomores. We only have one senior, and we have battled every team we have faced. Monett is the No. 1 team in the state, and we gave it our all tonight. As a coach, that is all I can ask of my kids.”

The Cubs were the fourth state-ranked team the Wildcats had dueled in the last four matches.

“We wrestled Seneca last week and then Bolivar and Logan-Rogersville,” Fortner said. “We’ll turn around and face those teams in our district, which is the toughest in the state. Facing this kind of competition will only make us better.”

One reason Fortner was pleased with his team is the fact that the large group of wrestlers have a solid foundation and that will make them even tougher in the next few seasons.

“All our guys came to us out of our youth program,” Fortner said. “We aren’t starting from scratch. We have 15- and 16-year-olds battling 17- and 18-year-olds. It is only going to make us better and stronger. We are way ahead developmentally than where we were three years ago,”
