Prairie offers look at natural growth at Field Day

Wednesday, October 9, 2019
For the past 12 years, the University of Missouriís Southwest Research Center near Mt. Vernon has had a prairie which scientists watch to learn more about native plants. Andy Thomas, research assistant professor with the university, offered prairie tours during Field Day. Most plants come for seeds thrown on the ground during winter, and maintenance involves annual brushhogging or burning, stimulating the growth of plants that support pollinators. Thomas said while grass is part of the ecosystem, the lack of grass in the prairie section these days offers a better balance. Murray Bishoff/Cassville Democrat
