Wildcats stumped by Seneca
5 lead changes end with Indians on top, 28-21
A back-and-forth game featuring five lead changes and plagued by penalties wound up with Cassville falling on the road to Seneca, 28-21.
Seneca started the contest with a decisive drive, going 80 yards and overcoming a fourth-and-2 en route to a 14-yard passing touchdown through traffic.
While the Indians took 6:16 off the clock, Cassville wasted no time responding. After a DJ White kickoff return to midfield, it took two plays to cover the rest of the way, with White reeling in a 48-yard touchdown strike.
After forcing a Seneca punt, Cassville drive to inside the 5, but the Indians held strong. The Wildcats settled for a 21-yard Drake Reese field goal to take a 10-8 lead.
Seneca, however, mirrored the Wildcats’ first drive with a return to midfield, a 10-yard gain, then a 40-yard touchdown run to reclaim a 14-10 edge.
Cassville managed to add 3 more with a 43-yard Reese field goal with 32 seconds left in the half.
To start the second half, White pulled in a 20-yard catch. Zach Coenen late capped a 63-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run for a 21-14 lead.
Just 2:23 of game time later, Seneca connected a 39-yard touchdown pass to pull within 1.
The final score came with 2:13 left in the game. After suffering a personal foul penalty, the Indians drove 80 yards in 8 plays and punched the ball in on a 1-yard run.
Cassville converted a fourth-and-11 on its final drive, but a couple penalties on the drive hindered progress. With 6 seconds left, the Wildcats earned a first down, leaving 1 second on the clock and not enough time to spike the ball.
Cassville returns home Friday, hosting East Newton in its Homecoming tilt. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
