Wildcats win big over Aurora
Opening kickoff fumble recovery returned for TD sets tone in 42-0 thrashing
Cassville wasted no time Friday ensuring it would start its 2019 campaign with a win, routing Aurora on its home turf, 42-0.
Cassville kicked off to the Houn’ Dawgs and forced a fumble that Brett Cooper caught and returned 23 yards to paydirt only 9 seconds into the contest.
After allowing one first down, the Wildcats forced a punt, and a 41-yard pass from Deven Bates to Killian Barbee set up Bowen Preddy for a 12-yard trot into the end zone.
After another Houn’ Dawg punt and sizable return from DJ White, the Wildcats again found the end 10, this time on a 19-yard strike through the air from Bates to White. Cassville overcame two false starts after the pass to punch in the score.
Cassville continued the onslaught in the second quarter, with White pulling down a wide open pass for a 30-yard scoring play.
Aurora then sustained a clock-eating drive and looked to be threatening, but the Houn’ Dawgs’ chain hit its limit at the Cassville 37-yard line.
A punt pinned the Wildcats at their own 10, but on the first play of the drive, Preddy broke free down the home sideline for a 90-yard touchdown and a 36-0 halftime lead.
Cassville did not slow after halftime, as only a few plays in, Bates stumbles through the line but found his feet and sprinted 63 yards to add to the lead.
Cassville then put in the backups and ran the clock, and Cutter Hicks reeled in an interception to close out the win.
Cassville heads to Springfield Catholic Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
